The Northern Alaska Environmental Center (NAEC) is seeking a short-term contractor to assist with the reconciliation and organization of our 2025 financial records. We are looking to hire as soon as possible.

The contractor will work closely with NAEC’s Interim Executive Director and bookkeeper to review financial documentation, locate and organize records, and help ensure supporting documentation is complete and properly matched to financial records. A significant portion of the work will involve searching through Google Drive, reviewing digital and paper files, and tracking down invoices, receipts, payment documentation, and other financial records.

This position will involve access to highly confidential financial and organizational information, and the contractor must exercise a high level of discretion, accuracy, and professionalism.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Interim Executive Director and bookkeeper with reconciliation and cleanup of NAEC’s 2025 financial records.
  • Search Google Drive and organizational files for invoices, receipts, contracts, payment records, and other supporting documentation.
  • Review and organize digital and paper financial records.
  • Match supporting documentation to transactions and financial records as directed.
  • Identify missing, duplicate, or incomplete documentation and flag discrepancies for review.
  • Assist with tracking outstanding documentation and reconciliation items.
  • Organize, scan, save, and manage financial records in consistent file formats and locations.
  • Handle confidential financial, personnel, vendor, donor, and organizational information with strict discretion.
  • Complete other administrative or financial-record organization tasks related to the 2025 reconciliation process as needed.

Required Skills and Qualifications

The ideal contractor will be:

  • Proficient in Adobe Acrobat, Google Sheets, Gmail, and Google Drive.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Comfortable navigating large amounts of digital documentation and conducting extensive file searches.
  • Comfortable working with spreadsheets, financial records, receipts, invoices, PDFs, and similar documentation.
  • Able to work collaboratively with the Interim Executive Director and bookkeeper while also completing tasks independently.
  • Able to maintain strict confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive organizational information.
  • Dependable and able to accurately track and report hours worked.
  • Patient, persistent, and methodical when locating missing or difficult-to-find records.

Prior bookkeeping, accounting, financial administration, or nonprofit administrative experience is preferred, but strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and proficiency with the required software are most important.

Work Arrangement

Hours are flexible, and remote work is available. For individuals working in person, NAEC will provide desk space and an NAEC computer at our Fairbanks office.

The contractor will be expected to follow NAEC requirements regarding confidentiality, access to records, data security, and the handling of organizational information.

Compensation and Contract Terms

This is a temporary independent contractor position paid at $30 per hour. The contractor will track hours worked and submit an invoice every two weeks.

The contract will end October 15, 2026, unless otherwise agreed to in writing.
