This meeting matters.

AIDEA’s website has been updated with public notice of a board meeting scheduled for Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. The meeting agenda includes discussion of ANWR, the Ambler Access Project, Port MacKenzie, AIDEA financials, legislative matters, HEX, and SBED recapitalization. The agenda also includes a presentation labeled “Kaktovik Presentation.”

Most concerning, the agenda includes Resolution G26-05, an ANWR resolution, which would authorize up to $175 million for Arctic Refuge seismic development and up to $15 million for the upcoming Arctic Refuge lease sale, including two years of royalty payments, bonus bids, and fees. The agenda also states that AIDEA plans to go into executive session to discuss confidential and deliberative matters related to ANWR, the Ambler Access Project, Port MacKenzie, AIDEA financials, and legislative matters.

This is public money. These are public lands. Decisions of this scale should not move forward without full transparency, meaningful public input, and clear accountability for the costs and risks Alaskans are being asked to carry.

We encourage members of the public to tell AIDEA:

  • Keep public business public. Major decisions about ANWR, Ambler Road, Port MacKenzie, AIDEA financials, and legislative matters should not happen behind closed doors.
  • Stop using public resources to advance high-risk extractive projects. AIDEA should not spend public funds, staff time, or financing authority to advance Arctic Refuge oil and gas development or the Ambler Access Project without full transparency about costs, risks, and public benefit.
  • Demand accountability on energy financing. AIDEA’s materials include a HEX presentation. Members of the public can ask AIDEA to clearly disclose the public costs, risks, and expected benefits of any energy-related financing.
  • Support community-serving investments. AIDEA is also considering an amended resolution related to SBED recapitalization. Public financing should prioritize local businesses, affordable energy, housing, climate resilience, and infrastructure that directly benefits Alaskans.

AIDEA is a public corporation using public resources.

Alaskans deserve to know how decisions are being made, who benefits, and what risks the public is being asked to carry. Former Senate President Rick Halford recently raised similar concerns about AIDEA’s role as a large state-controlled pool of money, arguing that AIDEA funds should be brought back into the state budget process and compared against core public needs.
