Engineering News-Record (ENR) recently published an in-depth feature and companion video examining how thawing permafrost, coastal erosion, and increasingly severe storms are reshaping communities, infrastructure, and development across Alaska.

The article, “At the Frontier of Change: How—or Where—to Rebuild as Alaska’s Permafrost Disappears,” looks at the destruction in Kwigillingok and Kipnuk following Typhoon Halong, the growing challenges of building on unstable ground, and the difficult decisions communities face about whether rebuilding in place is even safe.

ENR places those communities within a much broader statewide picture. The article notes that Alaska communities are already experiencing the effects of a rapidly changing climate, as thawing permafrost destabilizes land and infrastructure and creates new challenges for roads, homes, water systems, and other essential facilities.

Northern Alaska Environmental Center Interim Executive Director Krystal Lapp spoke with ENR about another consequence of permafrost thaw: what happens when materials that have been locked in frozen ground begin to move into soils and waterways.

In the article, Lapp explains:

“Permafrost has acted like a freezer for a long time. As it thaws, it can release naturally occurring metals, mercury, nutrients and in some places, contaminants from old industrial, military, landfill, mining or fuel sites.”

In ENR’s companion video, “Remnants of a Storm,” she also discusses the potential consequences for groundwater:

“The permafrost thawing also affects our aquifers… we think of the permafrost layer as kind of like a little protective layer… So as it melts, that filtration system’s gone.”

The issue is already visible across northern Alaska. ENR reports that scientists have documented evidence of iron being released from thawing soils in more than 200 watersheds, including streams and rivers changing from clear water to rusty orange. The article also points to the growing concern that legacy contamination from industrial sites across the Arctic could become more mobile as permafrost continues to thaw.

The story also examines the consequences of disturbance and new development on permafrost. Engineers interviewed by ENR emphasize the importance of minimizing disturbance, while the article raises questions about how large new oil and gas infrastructure can be built on increasingly unstable ground.
For Northern, this coverage reinforces a fundamental point: permafrost thaw is not simply an engineering problem. It is a water-quality issue, a community-safety issue, an infrastructure issue, and a question about how decisions are made in a rapidly changing Arctic.

Those decisions must account for the cumulative impacts of development and climate change — and they must center the knowledge, safety, and self-determination of the communities experiencing those changes firsthand.
