The Fairbanks North Star Borough is accepting public comments on its draft Comprehensive Plan, which will guide land use, housing, infrastructure, business development, public investments, and other planning decisions over the next 20 years.
The draft also includes language relevant to data center development. Community members may want to review page 117, Section 73, addressing zoning regulations, and page 130, Section 97, which references data centers in its discussion of “modern and sustainable facilities.”
As large data center proposals continue to emerge in Interior Alaska, the Comprehensive Plan could influence how these facilities are zoned, located, and evaluated. Residents may wish to comment on energy and water use, impacts to nearby communities, infrastructure needs, environmental effects, public transparency, and whether local zoning rules adequately address this type of development.
Comments may be submitted online at fnsb.gov/compplan, by email to kayde.whiteside@fnsb.gov, by phone at 907-459-1262, or by mail to PO Box 71267, Fairbanks, AK 99707.
The Borough is also holding public road-show events July 20–23 in Fairbanks, North Pole, at the Tanana Valley Farmers Market, and in Ester. Residents are encouraged to read the draft and speak up about how future development, including data centers, should be addressed in the Borough.
