Every dollar of your gift will go to creating fun, high-quality outdoor learning experiences here in Interior Alaska. During our first year of operation, Adventure Borealis hosted a BIPOC Birding Club and many day trips including a berry picking outing and snowshoe walk. At our biggest event, we selected students from groups underrepresented in outdoor-oriented fields and focused on encouraging leadership and outdoor skills during a ten-day excursion to Macomb Plateau.
We envision outdoor spaces that are inclusive and diverse, with accessible programs and education that is truly welcoming! And we envision even greater ripple effects as Alaska’s public lands gain diverse advocates and people from all walks of life with deep connections to this land.
A recent study explored inclusivity in the outdoors and found that nearly 1 in 5 respondents experienced discrimination when outside. Additionally, the study found that members of the LGBTQIA+ community are more likely to feel unwelcome in the outdoors, that people of color are more likely to experience discrimination when outside, and women are increasingly more afraid of men when in the outdoors.
It is our hope that Adventure Borealis can make participating in natural history excursions in Interior Alaska more accessible, safe, and inclusive for all people. We pledge to operate in a way that is respectful of the land and the traditional cultures that have lived on and with these lands since time immemorial.
