Alaskans Condemn Trump’s Revocation of Ocean Protections

FAIRBANKS, ALASKA--A broad coalition of Alaskans reacted with outrage to President Donald J. Trump’s impending Executive Order released Thursday, revoking oil and gas protections in vast swaths of Alaska’s Chukchi and Beaufort seas. The arctic waters were withdrawn from future oil and gas sales last year by the outgoing Obama administration after a five-year grassroots campaign by concerned Alaskans. The coalition, including Alaska Natives from front-line communities and their allies in climate and environmental justice advocacy, promised fierce resistance against Trump plans for offshore drilling in Alaska’s arctic.

Department of the Interior Approves Risky Extraction

Today the Department of the Interior (DOI) approved Royal Dutch Shell’s drilling plan for the Chukchi Sea—miles off the coast of Wainwright. Shell will receive two well permits to drill but these will not allow them to go into hydrocarbon zones, nor will it allow them to drill simultaneous wells. However, upon the return of the capping stack, held on the now broken Fennica, Shell may apply for yet another modified Application for Permit to Drill (APD).
