What Do We Do Now?
How do we come to terms with the outcome of the recent election? What do we do now? We get involved. We don't stop fighting...
This morning when the staff of the Northern Alaska Environmental Center walked into the office, the burden of protecting our sacred places, open spaces, clean water and air, and the people that depend on them seemed heavy. It was quiet in the office, but then something amazing happened. A group of committed activists sat down in our conference room for their standing Wednesday meeting. They showed up! They kept doing what they always do - fighting. They are activists and we are taking a que from them. Tomorrow, we will all walk into this office and continue the work that this organization set out to do 45 years ago. Please allow me to take a moment to remind you all of the power that exists in our numbers. There is power in an engaged base of support to fight the opening of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to development, building the road to the Ambler mining district, and drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf. This morning the burden may be feeling overwhelmingly heavy - but as a center, as activists, we have the power among us to keep winning. Stay engaged and know that together we can continue to keep northern Alaska protected. - Elisabeth
What You Can Do Now
It is not the time to give up hope. Far from it. Now is the time for us to stand up, together, and protect the precious, fragile lands and waters of Alaska. Now is the time for us to remind ourselves what we work for, what our mission is, and reaffirm our commitment to these goals. This is our mission: The Northern Alaska Environmental Center promotes conservation of the environment and sustainable resource stewardship in Interior and Arctic Alaska through education and advocacy. We work on the local level, seeking community input and collaboration to effect change in these areas. We work as a community. You are our community. The Northern Center is the place where you can work on issues, take action, and participate in this conversation. Do not forget this. Here's how you can get involved:
▪ Reaffirm your commitment to the Northern Center and renew your membership.
▪ Volunteer. All help is appreciated, needed, and fosters our sense of community.
▪ Join an Issues Committee or our Board. Be an active part of the change.
