Coal Ash Regulations Petition
In Alaska, coal-fired power plants generate tens of thousands of metric tons of waste each year, known as coal combustion wastes, of which a major component is coal ash. Coal ash throughout the nation has been found to contain concerning levels of toxic chemicals that pose serious risks to human health when inhaled in the form of wind blown dust.
OUR HEALTH,
OUR RIGHT TO KNOW!
Dear Commissioner Larry Hartig:
I urge the Alaska Department of Conservation (ADEC) to implement appropriate regulations to ensure safeguards for the handling, transport, storage and reuse of coal ash.
1. Transportation: Covered trucks and protective measures to
reduce fugitive dust during handling
2. Storage: Composite liners for landfills, water runoff controls and
ground water monitoring
3. Reclamation: Appropriate safeguards for reuse and applications
4. Disposal: Define “storage” time periods to limit erosion and migration
