Citizens Ballot Initiaitive to Restore Coastal Zone Management

NAEC is supporting a citizen's initiative to restore Alaska's coastal management program, which expired this spring after several decades of successful operation.
The Alaska Coastal Management Program helps coordinate federal, state, and local permitting processes, and gives local governments a voice in these decisions, helping address problems early and reduce the need for lawsuits. From our perspective it's a no-brainer that supports effective and efficient government and provides a needed local perspective. It's a shame that Alaska--with the longest coastline in the country--is the only coastal state without a coastal management program.

After the program was killed by Governor Parnell during Alaska's 2011 legislative session, local elected officials from around the state have organized under the banner of the Alaska Sea Party to put the issue before Alaska's voters directly. In an unprecedented effort, the Alaska Sea Party, and a huge network of paid and volunteer signature gatherers, will be attempting to collect 26,000 signatures from around the state before January 17th, 2012.

If you're a registered Alaskan voter, stop into our office and sign the petition!

At the Annual General Meeting of the Alaska Conservation Alliance, we decided to support the Alaska Sea Party and their effort to re-establish the coastal management program.  Please consider taking an initiative booklet and gathering signatures over the next two weeks.  For more information visit alaskacoastalmanagement.org and sign up to "Like" the organization's Facebook page.

This is our chance to show Gov. Parnell that Alaskans want a say in development decisions in their coastal communities.
