AK—Today the Department of the Interior (DOI) approved Royal Dutch Shell’s largest ever-contemplated exploration plan for the Chukchi Sea—often referred to as Lease Sale 193. The approval of Arctic Ocean drilling comes just days after the U.S. takeover of the Arctic Council, where their top priority is addressing the increasing threats of climate change in the region. This is in direct contrast to the Obama Administration’s commitment to immediate and effective climate action.
The U.S. Department of the Interior confirmed Lease sales in the Chukchi Sea. These lease sales will allow Royal Dutch Shell to reenter the Arctic Ocean for oil and gas development.

"Today's decision by the Bureau of Land Management is disappointing. The National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (Reserve) is America's largest and most wild parcel of public land--a thriving and fragile ecosystem. This decision threatens the subsistence and cultural value of the Reserve's Special Areas. NPR-A should be protected to the highest extent possible to create a balance between conservation and development."
Last week the federal Bureau of Ocean Management (BOEM) released its proposed five-year offshore leasing program for 2017-2022 including future leases in the Arctic Ocean.
