Arctic Impacts

Alaska is warming faster than anywhere on earth. Wildlife and communities face mounting impacts as sea ice melts, lakes dry up, and coasts erode yet risky oil, gas, and coal mining further fuel the problem. Alaska’s renewable energy solutions can reduce greenhouse gas emissions to achieve a sustainable future.

Arctic Refuge
Threatened by extinction from melting sea ice, more polar bear mothers seek den sites on refuge lands.  Porcupine caribou’s migration routes are changing so Gwich’in hunters are at risk.  Glaciers are melting.  Arctic Refuge protection is an emblem of our bold turn to a clean energy future to arrest global warming.

Yukon Flats Refuge
In the warming refuge, 10% of lakes have dried up, lesser scaup nesting is down, forest fires and insect outbreaks are up, and salmon are unhealthy.  Gwich’in tribes, concerned that rapid changes undermine their cultural survival, have launched renewable energy.

Western Arctic
Teshekpuk Lake coastal erosion has modified goose habitats.  Weird weather adds danger to hunters and cultural traditions.  Icing from winter rains makes it harder for caribou to graze.  If regional coal is mined, exports may evade U.S. emissions rules.

Arctic Ocean
Vanishing sea ice habitats threaten polar bears, seals, and walrus and new oil drilling would further stress marine ecosystems.  Bering Sea fish are moving north into the Arctic Ocean.  Eroding sea coasts risk villages.  A new conservation and energy plan is needed.

Better Energy Solutions
There’s a better way to repower America using Alaskan ingenuity.  We must solve our economic, energy and environmental problems by building a clean energy economy while preserving our most treasured wild places.
