Camp Habitat seeks assistant director

Camp Habitat is a nature education and ecology camp for kids located at Creamer’s Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge in Fairbanks, Alaska. They provide children with guided explorations of their natural surroundings, through interactive hands-on activities during four different programs: Nature Sprouts (ages 4-5), Nature Detectives (ages 6-7), Water Striders (ages 8-9), and Refuge Adventurers (ages 10-11). Camp Habitat is currently seeking an assistant director.

Camp Habitat is currently seeking an assistant director with the following job responsibilities and qualifications. See the bottom of the post for application instructions.


Responsibilities 

Under the Direction of the Camp Habitat Director:

o Prepare for the camp season including: recruit campers, organize and attend recruitment events, help recruit staff, update curriculum, develop new curriculum, set up camp, develop camp library, organize supplies, compile staff manuals, train camp staff;o Assist with administrative duties;

o Assist with managing camp staff and camp operations when camp is in session;

o Work as a substitute instructor if needed;

o Attend and participate in staff meetings;

o Assist with everyday logistics for camp;

o Participate in overnight campouts;

o Be familiar with camp operations and information and be able to communicate this to employees and parents;

o Assure a safe physical and psychologically supportive environment for all children;

o Other duties as assigned by the Director of Camp Habitat.

Qualifications Desired

o Enrolled in or graduate of college within the field of environmental education, outdoor education, education, natural science, or other related field;

o Sincere enjoyment and respect for children and nature;

o Experience teaching and/or working with children;

o Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;

o General knowledge of ecological processes, Alaskan flora and fauna, basic outdoor skills, and sound environmental practices; 

o Flexibility, enthusiasm, and the desire and ability to make environmental education a fun, experiential journey of discovery; 

o Ability to deal effectively and patiently with discipline;

o Knowledge of computer programs including Microsoft Word and Excel; 

o Leadership and administrative experience a plus; 

o First Aid, CPR, and a valid driver’s license, Must pass a state background check.

Dates: April 2016 – August 2016, Salary: $15/hr,

Schedule: full time during May, June, and July; half time during April, and 1⁄4 time during August.
